The Truro City Study Support Centre is part of a national initiative called Playing for Success also known as PfS.
The PfS initiative aims to raise children's literacy and numeracy levels using state of the art IT equipment and the inspirational surroundings of a sporting venue. The Centres use the environment and medium of sports to help motivate pupils identified by their schools, as being in need of a boost to help them get back up to speed in the core subjects and improve their self esteem and confidence.
Children are invited to the study centre where they take part in a variety of fun and educational activities. Typically, each pupil attends a three hour session each week for 7 weeks or receives around 20 hours of provision. Centres deliver after school hours, at the weekend and in the holidays.
A Centre Manager (a qualified and experienced teacher), is supported by professional assistants, teaching assistants and members of the local community who act as mentors.
The Centre has strong links with schools to ensure that the Centre Manager and other staff understand pupils needs and the schools recognise pupils' achievements at the centre.
